Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev meets with Foreign Minister of Bangladesh Khalilur Rahman

The officials discussed interparliamentary relations and cooperation within the UN in view of Mr Rahman’s election as President of the 81st General Assembly.

Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev had a meeting with Foreign Minister of Bangladesh Khalilur Rahman.

The Deputy Speaker noted that Khalilur Rahman’s visit to Russia following the parliamentary election in Bangladesh and immediately following his election as President of the 81st UN General Assembly indicates a high level of relations between the two countries and creates a solid foundation for further strengthening the political dialogue and for the implementation of new joint projects in the economy, energy, and humanitarian affairs.

“Russian parliamentarians are ready to support the positive trends in our bilateral relations,” Konstantin Kosachev stressed.

He further noted that Russia and Bangladesh are united in their view that the world will be stable and secure only when it is multi-polar and when the relations between the states will be built on the principles of equality as enshrined in the United Nations Charter.

“We sincerely hope that these are the approaches you will defend as President of the 81st General Assembly.”

Konstantin Kosachev called for establishing a friendship group with Russia in the parliament of Bangladesh. “This decision would facilitate a more regular dialogue.”

Khalilur Rahman said that Russia and Bangladesh enjoy a productive interparliamentary relationship. He supported the proposal to create a friendship group with Russia in the parliament of Bangladesh. The Foreign Minister expressed certainty that the group would foster parliamentary experience exchanges, joint projects, and youth contacts.

The meeting participants also covered issues pertaining to parliamentary efforts promoting the development of Russia-Bangladesh trade, energy and humanitarian cooperation.

Ivan Abramov, First Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Economic Policy and Head of the Group on Cooperation Between the Federation Council and the Parliament of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, and Alexander Khozin, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, also participated in the meeting.
