Grigory Karasin: Russia and Uruguay demonstrate commitment to restoring the scale of bilateral cooperation

Parliamentary support for the Intergovernmental Russia-Uruguay Mixed Commission for the Promotion of Trade and Economic Relations will be mutually beneficial, the senator noted.

Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Grigory Karasin held a meeting with Minister of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay Luis Alfredo Fratti Silveira.

Current issues on the bilateral, regional, and international agendas were addressed. The importance of expanding interparliamentary ties between Russia and Uruguay was underscored.

Luis Alfredo Fratti Silveira detailed his meetings and negotiations during the recently concluded St Petersburg International Economic Forum.

As Grigory Karasin noted, Russia and Uruguay share a long history of friendly relations – relations which parliamentarians must support and further strengthen.

“Although the momentum of bilateral cooperation has declined somewhat in recent years for various reasons, there is a mutual commitment to restoring its previous scale, primarily in the trade and economic domain. The high level of Uruguay’s participation in the St Petersburg International Economic Forum is clear evidence of the seriousness of the Uruguayan leadership’s intentions to expand relations with Russia,” affirmed Grigory Karasin.

“We concur with our Uruguayan partners in our desire to intensify parliamentary interaction, which is a traditionally important component of bilateral cooperation. Parliamentary support for the Intergovernmental Russia-Uruguay Mixed Commission for the Promotion of Trade and Economic Relations will be mutually beneficial,” the senator stated.

Grigory Karasin emphasised that the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs stands ready to utilise various channels for further collaboration with Uruguayan colleagues. “We consider it important to work within the MERCOSUR – EAEU framework. We are determined to strengthen interregional ties.”

“We have good prospects for cooperation, which need to be underpinned by substantive content,” Grigory Karasin stated.

“We expect that Vice President, President of the General Assembly and Senate of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay Ana Carolina Cosse Garrido will be able to avail herself this year of the invitation from the Speaker of the Federation Council to visit Russia,” said the Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs.
