The meeting took place on the sidelines of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly’s spring session in St Petersburg.
Speaker of the Federation Council and Chair of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly Council Valentina Matvienko met with Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbaeva. The meeting was held in St Petersburg on the sidelines of the spring session of the Interparliamentary Assembly of the CIS Member Nations.
The Federation Council Speaker thanked her Uzbekistani counterpart for personally attending the session and commended the active and constructive contribution of Uzbekistan’s parliamentarians to the Assembly’s work.
Valentina Matvienko underscored the significance of President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s decision to join the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly in 2018. She noted that relations between Russia and Uzbekistan are founded on a comprehensive strategic partnership and alliance. “The fact that the President of Uzbekistan came to Moscow to attend the 9 May parade and stood alongside the people of Russia on Victory Day speaks for itself. I know how much attention he devotes to veterans and survivors of the siege of Leningrad,” Valentina Matvienko said.
Valentina Matvienko thanked Uzbekistan for its support of the cultural and educational project Memory Train.
Tanzila Narbaeva emphasised the importance of promoting historical memory among younger generations.
The two speakers also discussed interparliamentary cooperation between Russia and Uzbekistan, including through the Commission on Cooperation between the Upper Houses of Parliament, engagement at international forums, and the development of regional ties between the two countries. “More than 80 constituent entities of the Russian Federation maintain cooperation with regions of Uzbekistan,” Valentina Matvienko said.
During the meeting, the Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis spoke about the Second Asian Women’s Forum, which was held in Bukhara.
The meeting was also attended by Federation Council Deputy Speaker Konstantin Kosachev, Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Grigory Karasin, First Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Vladimir Dzhabarov, and Secretary General of the IPA CIS Council Dmitry Kobitsky.
