Grigory Karasin: Russian senators aim to intensify parliamentary cooperation with Uruguay

The senator holds a meeting with Uruguayan Ambassador to Russia.

Grigory Karasin, Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs, has held a meeting with María del Rosario Portell Casanova, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay to the Russian Federation.

During the conversation, the senator noted that Russia and Uruguay share long‑standing friendly relations based on mutual respect and pragmatic cooperation. Nevertheless, the momentum of these relations has slowed somewhat in recent years.

Grigory Karasin emphasised the importance of expanding ties between parliamentarians. “We are committed to intensifying parliamentary cooperation. We look forward to the speedy completion of the formation of a friendship group with Russia within the General Assembly of Uruguay,” he said.

The senator expressed the hope that Ana Carolina Cosse Garrido, Vice‑President, President of the General Assembly and President of the Senate of Uruguay, would be able to accept the invitation extended by Valentina Matvienko, Speaker of the Federation Council, to visit Russia this year.

Grigory Karasin noted that the Russian‑Uruguayan Intergovernmental Commission, which facilitates the development of bilateral trade and economic relations, is operating quite actively.

“We are also interested in establishing and strengthening region‑to‑region ties. We stand ready to provide this process with our full support,” the senator said.

In Grigory Karasin’s view, practical cooperation between the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR) holds great promise. Such cooperation, the parliamentarian believes, would fully serve the interests of the member states of these two major economic blocs.

For her part, María del Rosario Portell Casanova advocated for the further development of bilateral ties in various spheres. She announced that, in the coming year, the Embassy of Uruguay in the Russian Federation plans to hold a series of events marking the 170th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
