Konstantin Kosachev: Russia is interested in de-escalating situation around Iran

If necessary, Russia is ready to assist the implementation of Iran-US agreements, the Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council said.

Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev has met with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Iran Kazem Jalali.

They mentioned the strategic nature of bilateral relations and substantive and fruitful contacts at the high and highest levels and between their parliaments.

Konstantin Kosachev stated that the United States has been putting pressure on Iran for decades. “All these years, the Iranian people and authorities have been acting in accordance with their sovereignty and national interests, upholding Iran’s positions in the world. You can rely on Russia’s assistance in this,” the deputy speaker said.

The agenda of the meeting includes bilateral and international issues, as well as the third round of indirect Iran-US nuclear talks held in Geneva.

Konstantin Kosachev noted that the de-escalation of the situation around Iran would be the best outcome of these talks. “Iran has every right to develop its peaceful nuclear programme. If practical agreements are reached in Geneva, Russia will be ready to help Iran implement them.”

Konstantin Kosachev also noted the unsubstantiated statements made by US negotiators to the effect that Iran is allegedly “one week away” from creating nuclear weapons. To demonstrate the ephemeral nature of such allegations, he cited an Israeli news item published 42 years ago, which said that Tehran was at the last stage of creating a nuclear bomb. “We believe that these allegations are far removed from reality. We completely trust the statements made by the supreme political and spiritual leaders of Iran,” the deputy speaker pointed out.

Kazem Jalali expressed gratitude to Russia for supporting Iran. The ambassador mentioned effective cooperation between the two countries’ heads of state and foreign ministries. He also briefed the deputy speaker about the meeting of the Russian-Iranian intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation held in Tehran the week before.

The officials also discussed bilateral economic and energy cooperation and the development of humanitarian contacts. They also called for accelerating the ratification of interstate and intergovernmental agreements by their countries’ parliaments.
