Russia and Libya share a long-standing track record and many years of experience in working with one another, the Senator pointed out.
Chairman of the Federation Council’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, Grigory Karasin, and Chair of the Federation Council Committee on the Rules of Procedure and Parliamentary Governance, Vyacheslav Timchenko, held a meeting with Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee for Oversight Bodies at Libya’s House of Representatives, Zayed Hadiya.
“We view this visit as a following up and building on the existing bilateral dialogue, as well as a commitment to forging a closer partnership with Russia while proactively expanding mutually beneficial cooperation,” Grigory Karasin said.
The Senator continued by arguing that Russia was interested in Libya emerging from a protracted period of instability as quickly as possible to become once again a prosperous state with solid institutions, a viable army and law enforcement agencies, and once again assuming the role of a major actor on the regional stage.
The Senator reminded the gathering that from the outset Russia has been diligent and responsive in its efforts to promote an inclusive settlement in the civil conflict, which has been ravaging the country, by seeking to facilitate the political process in Libya within international platforms.
“We stand ready to engage as parliamentarians for bringing about a peaceful resolution in this country,” Grigory Karasin pointed out.
He stressed that Russia and Libya have built a solid track, recorded and accumulated many years of experience and positive traditions in working together. There were many Russia economic operators working in Libya before 2011.
“Our companies are interested in resuming or reviving their Libyan projects as long as the necessary security conditions are in place,” Grigory Karasin said.
In his remarks, Vyacheslav Timchenko talked about the Russian parliament and explained to the Libyan delegation what made it special. “Russians stand for a multipolar world order, for honest cooperation, non-interference in the domestic affairs of other countries and for supporting friendly nations,” the Senator noted.
Zayed Hadiya stressed Russia’s instrumental role in reaching compromises in the intra-Libyan settlement process and promoting dialogue within the country free from outside interference. The Libyan MP expressed hope that the two countries would further expand their trade and economic ties.
The meeting’s agenda also included an exchange of opinions on the latest political developments and efforts to step up cooperation, primarily at a parliamentary level.
