Konstantin Kosachev: Our Brazilian colleagues officially expressed support for the creation of a BRICS+ geopolitical group within the IPU

Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council met with the Ambassador of Brazil to Russia.

Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev had a meeting with Sergio Rodrigues dos Santos, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federative Republic of Brazil to the Russian Federation, who has recently assumed his post as head of the Brazilian diplomatic mission in Moscow.

“Relations with Brazil have always been a priority for us. They go far beyond bilateral cooperation, as many processes within multilateral formats depend on their state,” Konstantin Kosachev said.

He noted that Brazil was effectively fulfilling its chairmanship of BRICS, which largely shapes the contours of the emerging multipolar world order.

“The overall state of Russian-Brazilian relations has a very positive impact on interparliamentary cooperation,” the Deputy Speaker added.

According to him, Russian senators hold regular meetings with their Brazilian counterparts, both bilaterally and at multilateral platforms.

Konstantin Kosachev recalled that the next session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly would take place in Geneva, where Russian and Brazilian representatives plan to hold meetings on the sidelines:

“At the end of September, we received official notification from our Brazilian colleagues expressing their support for the creation of a BRICS+ geopolitical group within the IPU,” he stated.

The Deputy Speaker noted that Russian parliamentarians are ready to discuss a broad range of issues as part of interparliamentary dialogue.

Sergio Rodrigues dos Santos agreed that it is important to strengthen Russian-Brazilian ties, noting that cooperation with Russia is vital for Brazil in the economic, scientific, technical, and cultural spheres. He emphasised that both countries could jointly and effectively counter attempts to impose a unipolar world order, highlighting the key roles of the G20 and BRICS in this process.

The Ambassador also expressed his intention to actively promote the development of Russian-Brazilian interparliamentary cooperation through diplomatic channels.
