Grigory Karasin and Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Russian Federation discuss interparliamentary cooperation prospects as a meaningful tool for enhancing bilateral ties

During their talks, they also touched upon issues of trade and economic, cultural, humanitarian and international collaboration between both countries.

Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs, Grigory Karasin, had a working meeting with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Sri Lanka to the Russian Federation, Shobini Kaushala Gunasekera.

During the conversation, the officials conducted an in-depth review of the current state of Russia – Sri Lanka relations and their development prospects and noted their traditionally friendly and constructive nature.

Grigory Karasin noted that Russia was interested in strengthening mutually beneficial cooperation with Sri Lanka in multiple areas, including trade, the economy and cultural-humanitarian sphere.

The parties focused on the potential of interparliamentary collaboration as an meaningful tool for enhancing bilateral ties. “We are committed to further strengthen collaboration with the Parliament of Sri Lanka in the bilateral format and within the framework of multilateral organisations,” the senator noted.

They also touched upon key international and regional issues, reaffirmed their close or overlapping positions on multiple issues of the global agenda, and called for strengthening the multipolar system of international relations based on the primacy of international law, as well as the central coordinating role of the United Nations Organisation.

Grigory Karasin thanked the Sri Lankan side for its well-thought-out approach towards evaluating the Ukraine crisis and noted that Sri Lanka had not joined anti-Russia sanctions.

In turn, Shobini Kaushala Gunasekera noted that the Russian language was becoming more popular in Sri Lanka.

During their talks, the sides agreed to maintain working contact on a wide range of issues.
