Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev and Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Grigory Karasin met with Deputy Speaker of the Senate of the Republic of Kenya Kathuri Murungi.
In his remarks, Konstantin
Kosachev said that Russian parliamentarians view the Republic
of Kenya as an important partner for the Russian Federation, both regionally
and globally.
“Parliamentarians are investing proactive efforts to ensure progress in our relations with African countries, including Kenya, with the view to ensuring that these relations are mutually beneficial and focus on achieving tangible results,” Konstantin Kosachev stressed.
The Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council highlighted inter-parliamentary friendship groups as an effective format for such cooperation and went on to propose establishing groups of this kind within the Federation Council and the Senate of the Republic of Kenya.
Konstantin Kosachev also emphasised the need for both countries to benefit from opportunities offered by international parliamentary platforms for working together, including during the upcoming 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva.
During the conversation, the parties exchanged views on plans for future inter-parliamentary contacts between Russia and Kenya.
Kathuri Murungi supported Konstantin Kosachev’s
proposals.
Kathuri Murungi later met with Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Grigory
Karasin.
During the meeting, Grigory Karasin reaffirmed
the commitment by Russian senators to fostering active dialogue and expanding
cooperation with their Kenyan colleagues across various sectors.
Grigory Karasin pointed out that parliamentarians
make a meaningful contribution to strengthening legal frameworks, particularly
in energy, telecommunications, agriculture, tourism, science, education, and other domains. “We also advocate for the signing of relevant documents to establish an intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation between
our countries as quickly as possible,”
the senator added.
Grigory Karasin and Kathuri Murungi then turned to issues raised during the earlier meeting with Konstantin Kosachev, the Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council. Mr Murungi expressed optimism that their joint efforts would help advance the discussed initiatives.
Also present at the meeting were First Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation and State Building Artem Sheikin, member of the Federation Council Committee on Federal Structure, Regional Policy, Local Government and Northern Affairs Alexander Voloshin, and member of the Federation Council Committee on the Budget and Financial Markets Mikhail Ilezov.
