Inna Svyatenko: The upcoming 80th anniversary of Victory was among the key topics at IPU Assembly in Tashkent

The Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council discussed key moments of the Inter-Parliamentary Union session.

The high level of representation at bilateral meetings, negotiations and strategic sessions held at the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Tashkent attests to the strengthening of international cooperation, Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council Inna Svyatenko said in an interview with Sputnik Uzbekistan.

“The forum has shown that parliamentary diplomacy plays a key role in establishing sustainable ties between states, contributing to the peaceful resolution of conflicts and the development of mutually beneficial cooperation,” she said.

Inna Svyatenko noted that parliamentarians from the Inter-Parliamentary Union member states maintain a constructive dialogue and are actively involved in the events including those held in our country — the Nevsky International Ecological Congress, the Eurasian Women’s Forum, the Commonwealth of Fashion forum, and a number of others.

The Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council singled out, among the key topics of the forum, the issues of democracy and human rights, respect for children’s rights, expanded involvement and greater activity of parliaments in achieving social progress and building a just society, the environmental agenda and climate change, expanding women’s rights and youth policy, as well as strengthening relations of friendship, good-neighbourliness and strategic partnership.

The Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council underlined that this year is a special one. This is why the topic of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, the preservation of historical truth and patriotic education of the younger generation was also raised at the Assembly’s events. “Countries that cherish their past know the price at which the present has been built. The parliamentarians urged to prevent the falsification of history, to resolutely oppose the justification and glorification of the Nazi and fascist movements, including the erection of monuments and memorials promoting racism, religious discrimination, hatred on ethnic or religious grounds, xenophobia and related intolerance in all their shapes and manifestations,” Inna Svyatenko said.

According to her, special focus was given to the women’s agenda, and the ensuing discussions highlighted key aspects of women’s rights and their participation in the political life of their countries.

Speaking about the progress in Russian-Uzbekistani cooperation, Inna Svyatenko stressed that Uzbekistan is a reliable partner of the Russian Federation in various domains. “We successfully cooperate in the economy, textile industry, agro-industrial complex, and pursue cultural and educational projects,” the senator concluded.
