Valentina Matvienko meets with Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of Uzbekistan Nuriddinjon Ismoilov

The Federation Council Speaker expressed appreciation for the organisation of the 150th Assembly of the IPU in Tashkent.

Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko, who visited Uzbekistan for the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, met with Speaker of the Legislative Chamber (lower house) of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Nuriddinjon Ismoilov.

Speaking on behalf of the Russian delegation, Valentina Matvienko thanked the Uzbek colleagues for their hospitality and praised the high standards of the organisation of the 150th Assembly of the IPU in Tashkent. She recalled that St Petersburg hosted the 137th IPU Assembly in 2017, which is an honorary and responsible mission. It was at that meeting that Uzbekistan resumed its membership in the global parliamentary organisation.

Valentina Matvienko congratulated members of the Uzbek parliament on winning the right to hold the 150th IPU Assembly, which amounts to recognition of the long path Uzbekistan has covered over the past few years. “This is certainly evidence of the international parliamentary community’s trust and respect. The Assembly is taking place in an atmosphere of openness, respect and truly cordial dialogue,” the Speaker of the Russian parliament’s upper house said.

She reaffirmed the invitation for the Uzbek colleagues to attend the gala meeting of the Interparliamentary Assembly of the CIS dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Victory, and the Nevsky International Ecological Congress in St Petersburg.

Nuriddinjon Ismoilov thanked Valentina Matvienko for attending the IPU events in Tashkent. “Members of the Uzbek parliament are committed to strengthening bilateral ties,” he noted.

The meeting was also attended by Federation Council Deputy Speaker Konstantin Kosachev, First Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Science, Education and Culture and co-chair of the Interparliamentary Commission on Cooperation between the Federation Council of the Russian Federation and the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Iliyas Umakhanov, as well as Secretary General – Head of the IPA CIS Council Secretariat Dmitry Kobitsky.
