Konstantin Kosachev: Russia-India inter-parliamentary dialogue is developing pro-actively both bilaterally and at international venues

The Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council met with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of India to Russia Vinay Kumar.

Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev held a meeting with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of India to Russia Vinay Kumar.

The Deputy Speaker noted the importance and special significance of contacts with representatives of India. “Relations between our nations, including between the parliaments, are a priority, given the role that Russia and India play in international affairs,” he emphasised.

Konstantin Kosachev stressed that Russia praises India’s current independent and sovereign foreign policy towards Russia and regarding other international issues.

He noted that the traditions of constructive interaction between the two countries were laid down when India gained independence back in 1947. “Over the recent few years, Russian-Indian relations have been considerably enhanced despite the obvious external pressure from the collective West. This was confirmed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Moscow and the leaders’ meeting at the BRICS Summit in Kazan,” he said.

Mr Vinay Kumar highlighted the intensity of the political dialogue and close cooperation between the two countries’ governments.

The parties concurred in the opinion that the inter-parliamentary dialogue is progressing both bilaterally and at international venues. Konstantin Kosachev commented on the important results of the G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit in New Delhi in 2023, which was attended by Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko. “This year, a high-level Indian delegation was an active participant in the 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum in St Petersburg,” he added.

According to Konstantin Kosachev, the importance of interaction with Indian parliamentarians is evident from the fact that the Federation Council’s Group for Cooperation with the Indian Parliament’s Council of States has been headed, since recently, by First Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council Vladimir Yakushev.
