The cooperation groups of the Federation Council and the National Assembly of the Republic of Nicaragua have held a joint meeting.
The cooperation groups of the Federation Council and the National Assembly of the Republic of Nicaragua have held a joint meeting, via videoconference, ahead of the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations between our countries, which were established on 12 December 1944, and the 9th anniversary of the Russia-Nicaragua Friendship Day.
Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev, who opened the meeting, read out a message of greetings from Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko to President of the National Assembly of Nicaragua Gustavo Porras Cortés on the occasion of the Russia-Nicaragua Friendship Day.
Konstantin Kosachev expressed appreciation for the fact that the Russia-Nicaragua Friendship Day is marked in the republic as a national holiday. “We regard this as the expression of fraternal feelings, solidarity, spiritual affinity and mutual striving for building a world based on equality, freedom, justice and mutual respect,” the Deputy Speaker pointed out.
He noted that Moscow and Managua had been together at the most difficult periods in global history, dealing with all challenges honourably. “There are many bright pages in the history of our relations, which is yet another evidence of their fraternal nature,” he said.
“Today, Russia-Nicaragua relations are developing successfully in the spirit of strategic partnership backed and strengthened by a constructive and trust-based dialogue, including at the highest level. We are sure that the further development of interparliamentary ties will be yet another vital element contributing to the strengthening of our bilateral relations,” Konstantin Kosachev emphasised.
Arling Patricia Alonso Gómez, First Vice President of the National Assembly of Nicaragua and co-Chair of the Russia-Nicaragua Interparliamentary Cooperation Commission, spoke about the practical aspects of bilateral interparliamentary ties at international platforms. “Substantial results have been achieved in many spheres of Russian-Nicaraguan cooperation,” she added.
Arling Patricia Alonso Gómez pointed out the resolve of the members of Nicaragua’s National Assembly to support Russia’s efforts to build a just and multipolar world.
The meeting was attended by Natalia Kosykhina, head of the Federation Council’s group for cooperation with the National Assembly of Nicaragua and member of the Federation Council Committee on Social Policy, and Nikolay Vladimirov, member of the cooperation group and First Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation and State Building.
The Nicaraguan delegation included co-Chair of the Russia-Nicaragua Interparliamentary Cooperation Commission Walmaro Antonio Gutierrez Mercado and members of the Nicaraguan National Assembly.
Natalia Kosykhina pointed out that the friendship group would soon have new members following the recent rotation of regional representatives in the upper house.
She also spoke about the Russian MPs assistance to the project to unveil a bust monument to Ruben Dario, an outstanding Nicaraguan poet and writer.
Natalia Kosykhina emphasised that interparliamentary cooperation helped create the necessary legislative framework for effective bilateral cooperation in various spheres.
The senator also reported on the 4th Eurasian Women’s Forum, which was held in St Petersburg in September 2024.
In this context, Natalia Kosykhina proposed giving momentum to Russian-Nicaraguan interparliamentary cooperation in the spheres of concern to women. “In light of the changing shape of the global world order, women, including the female members of parliament, can make a substantial contribution to forming a common creative agenda,” she noted. She also called on the Nicaraguan colleagues to assign a member of parliament for direct dialogue with the Council of the Eurasian Women's Forum and for planning practical projects.
The Nicaraguan delegates expressed readiness to continue joint work with their Russian colleagues.
The meeting participants also discussed youth affairs, a possible visit by the Russian cooperation group to Nicaragua next year, and other issues to be put on the agenda for discussion.
