Konstantin Kosachev takes part in a BRICS sherpas’ meeting

The meeting was held in Yekaterinburg.

Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev took part in a meeting of BRICS sherpas/sous-sherpas in Yekaterinburg. He attended a relevant panel and highlighted the results of efforts to promote BRICS inter-parliamentary cooperation.

Konstantin Kosachev spoke about the most important events within the BRICS parliamentary dimension that took place during the Russian Chairmanship, namely the meeting of chairs of committees on foreign affairs of BRICS parliaments (chambers of parliaments), held in Moscow in April 2024, and the 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum, which took place in St Petersburg in July 2024.

He reminded the audience that the Forum approved a Declaration highlighting such fundamental principles as respect for international law, the unconditional equality of all participants in international cooperation, the renunciation of interference in the internal affairs of others, and joint counteraction to new challenges and threats.

Heads of BRICS parliamentary delegations also met on the sidelines of the 149th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). The participants in the meeting discussed the possibility of creating a new geopolitical group, BRICS+, within the IPU. “This will be an important step towards developing the IPU’s parliamentary dimension and will enable member parliaments to exchange views on matters of mutual interest,” Mr Kosachev said.

According to the senator, the key event in the period of Russian Chairmanship – the BRICS Summit in Kazan in October 2024 – can be called historic, with its success recognised by all objective observers worldwide.

“The Summit’s Kazan Declaration focuses on development and common interests. The Summit unequivocally advocated the need “to lay the foundations for a more just, democratic and balanced multipolar world order,” Konstantin Kosachev said.

BRICS is an interstate group established in 2006. Russia assumed the BRICS Chairmanship on 1 January 2024. The year began with the accession of new members. In addition to the Russian Federation, Brazil, India, China, and South Africa, the group now includes Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
