Valentina Matvienko: The strong momentum of interparliamentary contacts between Russia and Pakistan is encouraging

As part of the official visit to Pakistan, Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko met with the Speaker of Pakistan’s National Assembly.

As part of the official visit to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko met with the Speaker of Pakistan’s National Assembly Sardar Sadiq, in Islamabad.

During the discussion, the Federation Council Speaker highlighted the active inter-parliamentary cooperation between Russia and Pakistan, particularly through the friendship groups in both the upper and lower houses of their parliaments. “The upcoming visit of a delegation from Pakistan’s lower house to Moscow this November holds significant importance,” Valentina Matvienko noted.

The meeting participants also addressed pressing global issues, including food security and counter-terrorism efforts. They emphasised that parliamentary collaboration plays a crucial role during periods of international uncertainty, with Russian-Pakistani relations fostering regional stability and sustainable development.

The Speaker of the Federation Council highlighted Russia’s efforts, alongside other nations, to help shape a more equitable multipolar international order, including through engagement at prominent international platforms.

Sardar Sadiq emphasised that unilateral, unlawful sanctions should not obstruct the progress of cooperation between Russia and Pakistan. He also highlighted the importance of strengthening inter-parliamentary relations, which have grown increasingly regular, and discussed recent and upcoming multilateral events in detail.

Earlier, the Federation Council Speaker met with the head of Pakistan’s upper house of Parliament, during which a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Federation Council and the Senate of Pakistan.
