The meeting was held at the 149th IPU Assembly in Geneva.
Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev addressed the meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s (IPU) Standing Committee on Peace and International Security during the 149th IPU Assembly. The discussion was devoted to the role of parliamentarians in ensuring nuclear security.
The Deputy Speaker noted the complex geopolitical situation in the world, which has significantly deteriorated in recent years.
Konstantin Kosachev emphasised that Russia had counted on the execution of international treaties on security and stability by other countries. “However, the United States withdrew from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty as far back as 2002.”
According to the Deputy Speaker, strategic security in the world depends on a number of factors. “Nuclear disarmament, safety of operating nuclear power plants, military security and arms control are needed,” he pointed out.
The senator urged the parliamentarians to defend the rule of international law. “Efficient cooperation is only possible if it is based on generally recognised legal standards, rather than on the rules-based order,” he said.
Konstantin Kosachev underscored that Russia has always been open to dialogue on the entire range of issues pertaining to international security.
