The Federation Council Speaker met with the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon.
Speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko met with President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon in Dushanbe.
Ms Matvienko is leading the Russian parliamentary delegation on its official visit to Tajikistan.
The President of Tajikistan proposed deliberations on the current status and future prospects of relations between Russia and Tajikistan, along with other pressing issues.
Emomali Rahmon remarked that trade and economic cooperation are progressing at a commendable level, and cultural ties are flourishing. He acknowledged the effective efforts of lawmakers from both countries in the realm of interparliamentary cooperation and expressed gratitude to the Russian legislators for their active role in strengthening bilateral contacts.
Valentina Matvienko stated, “Russia places significant emphasis on strengthening and expanding our allied, strategic relations with Tajikistan. This is largely due to our state leaders, who set the benchmarks and define the objectives.” She further noted that interactions between the governments, pertinent ministries, and regions of the two nations are productive.
“Currently, more than 70 Russian constituent entities maintain ties with regions in Tajikistan, and this cooperation is becoming increasingly substantive and concrete each year, with growing interest. This is of great importance,” the Speaker emphasised.
She highlighted that the atmosphere at the 8th Interparliamentary Forum, Tajikistan – Russia: Potential for Interregional Cooperation, convened in Dushanbe and organised by the upper chambers of the Russian and Tajik parliaments, along with the forum's concluding document, attest to this. “Interregional cooperation complements international cooperation in economic, investment, and cultural terms. We will persist in the work we have commenced.”
Valentina Matvienko extended her gratitude to the Tajik side for the hospitality and warm reception accorded to the Russian parliamentary delegation. Ms Matvienko observed the robust development of the capital of the republic since her previous visit 2.5 years ago. “Dushanbe – a clean, well-maintained, landscaped, and exceedingly verdant with numerous colours – leaves a very strong impression,” she remarked.
The Speaker also participated in a meeting between the President of the Republic of Tajikistan and the speakers of the parliamentary chambers involved in the interparliamentary conference, scheduled to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Constitution of Tajikistan on 11 October.
As part of the visit, the Federation Council delegation laid wreaths and flowers at the Eternal Flame memorial in Dushanbe's Victory Park, where soldiers of the Soviet Army, who succumbed to wounds sustained on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War while in the city's hospitals, are buried.
