Grigory Karasin: To ensure security in Central Asia, it is necessary to expand collaboration within CSTO and SCO

During the 8th Interparliamentary Forum Tajikistan – Russia: The Potential of Interregional Cooperation, senators took part in a roundtable discussion on regional security in Central Asia.

Dushanbe is currently hosting the 8th Interparliamentary Forum Tajikistan – Russia: The Potential of Interregional Cooperation. The senators attending the forum took part in a roundtable discussion on security in Central Asia in the context of the global geopolitical situation.

Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Grigory Karasin and Deputy Foreign Minister of the Republic of Tajikistan Imomi Sodik moderated the event.

The roundtable discussion was attended by First Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Vladimir Dzhabarov, First Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Defence and Security Vladimir Chizhov and Member of the Federation Council Committee on Defence and Security Dmitry Perminov.

Grigory Karasin stated that Russia-Tajikistan cooperation is based on shared approaches to countering external challenges and threats. “We view the attempts by the United States and its satellites to penetrate the region and undermine the traditionally friendly relations between our country and Central Asian states, among which Tajikistan holds an important place, as inappropriate and aimed at destabilising the situation in Central Asia.

“Russia has been and remains a partner of Tajikistan in combating drug trafficking and organised crime, joint border protection, and military and military-technical cooperation. Our two countries firmly advocate for efforts to strengthen the Collective Security Treaty Organisation. We believe that the CSTO is a guarantor of stability in Central Asia. Cooperation between the Commonwealth of Independent States countries has special significance, as it ensures the steady development of our economic ties,” Grigory Karasin said.

The Senator emphasised the necessity of expanding long-term collaboration within the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation to enhance security in Central Asia.

The roundtable discussion participants explored joint approaches to enhancing security in Central Asia and prospects for collaboration in addressing new regional challenges and threats. They focused on interregional cooperation between Tajikistan and Russia, particularly regarding new methods for responding to modern threats, including terrorism, extremism, drug trafficking and cybercrime.
