Konstantin Kosachev speaks at a conference on sustainable development and security in Eurasia

The event took place in Astana.

Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev made a working trip to the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council delivered a report at the Russia-Kazakhstan high-level conference, Sustainable Development and Security in the Eurasian Space.

The conference, held at the Palace of Independence in Astana, was opened by President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. Aide to the President of Russia Vladimir Medinsky read out a message of greetings from President Vladimir Putin to the conference participants.

Konstantin Kosachev spoke at a panel session dedicated to the prospects of multilateral cooperation and integration in the Eurasian space, its possible formats and the roles of Kazakhstan and Russia in these processes.

The Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council acknowledged Kazakhstan’s central role in shaping and implementing the Eurasian idea. According to the parliamentarian, it was no coincidence that Astana became the cradle of the EAEU. The integration processes under the EAEU and China’s Belt and Road Initiative are now being aligned to evolve as the Greater Eurasian Partnership project.

Konstantin Kosachev specifically focused on the key approaches to the Eurasian security architecture put forth by the President of Russia at a meeting with senior Foreign Ministry officials on 14 June 2024.

“We see that these approaches are shared by the overwhelming majority of our partners in Asia, and this paves the way to the “integration of integrations” – to the rapprochement of international organisations in order to harmonise efforts and institutions across the Eurasian space,” Konstantin Kosachev said.

In his view, all imbalances in security, grey zones, and alliances aimed against something rather than for something should become a thing of the past.

“Eurasia has a special responsibility in this respect. The only reliable way to protect the continent against threats is to establish an equal and indivisible security space,” Konstantin Kosachev stressed.

A meeting of MGIMO University alumni in the Republic of Kazakhstan on the occasion of its 80th anniversary was timed to coincide with the high-level conference.
