Andrey Yatskin: Russia attaches special importance to women’s international cooperation in addressing key environmental and climatic issues

The First Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council addressed the strategic session on “Women in Ecology: New Horizons of Growth” at the Eurasian Women’s Forum.

First Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council Andrey Yatskin co-moderated the strategic session on “Women in Ecology: New Horizons of Growth” at the Fourth Eurasian Women’s Forum in St Petersburg.

The senator welcomed the participants in the strategic session, acknowledging their active roles in improving the environmental situation in their countries and globally.

“Today, we are launching an environmental platform, “Women for a Clean Planet and Food Security,” which includes 11 thematic sessions at the Fourth Eurasian Women’s Forum,” Andrey Yatskin said.

He noted that residents of all countries were concerned about the state of the planet, the safety of its ecosystems, and climate stability, but women, according to opinion polls, were more sensitive to environmental problems. In Russia, women make up 70 percent of participants in volunteer and charity projects, with environmental protection being among their priorities.

“We see a number of inspiring examples of female involvement in solving environmental problems. A special exhibition, “Women Shill for Environment,” was even dedicated to the most active female environmentalists. Sponsored by the Eurasian Women’s Forum Council, the display was held at the Russian Parliament last year,” Andrey Yatskin added.

He stressed that Russia had always been serious about preserving its natural riches and will continue to do so. Next year, the implementation of a new national project, “Environmental Wellbeing,” will come under way. He specified that the project expands upon the best practices and focal points of “Ecology,” the previous national project.

“Our country attaches special importance to promoting women’s international cooperation in addressing key environmental and climatic issues. We have great hopes in this regard for BRICS expansion. Russia holds the BRICS Chairmanship in 2024,” he added.

The strategic session was attended by Russian Senators Yulia Lazutkina, Daria Lantratova, and Tatiana Sakharova, Minister for the Development of the Russian Far East and the Arctic Aleksei Chekunkov, Murmansk Region Governor Andrei Chibis, Deputy Chief of the Presidential Experts’ Directorate Svetlana Lukash, Chairman of the Zaporozhye Region Government Irina Gekht, EWF Council’s “Environmental Platform” project coordinator and Deputy Director of the Project Centre at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology Irina Gaida, Sberbank Senior Vice President Tatiana Zavyalova, Director of the Rosatom Sustainable Development Department Paulina Lion, Deputy Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly of Indonesia Lestari Moerdijat, W20 Chief Coordinator from the Republic of India Dharitri Patnaik, and others.

Following the event, recommendations will be drawn up to address environmental issues and improve the environmental situation in the world.
