First Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Sergei Kislyak met with Iraqi politician Adil Abdul-Mahdi.
Adil Abdul-Mahdi held various senior ministerial and government posts, and served as the country’s prime minister in 2018–2019.
Sergei Kislyak noted that relations between Russia and Iraq are of a friendly and mutually beneficial partnership.
“September will mark the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Over these years, a strong foundation has been laid to confidently promote cooperation in various spheres, including in inter-parliamentary relations,” the senator emphasised.
“Today, Russia and Iraq have a lot in common, including the vision of the emerging multipolar world order. This is a proper foundation for dialogue between our nations,” he noted.
According to Sergei Kislyak, Russia is carefully monitoring the developments in Iraq.
“We highly praise the Iraqi government’s efforts aimed at improving the situation in the country, as well as effective measures that have allowed for significantly reducing terrorist activity by ISIS and other groups.”
Adil Abdul-Mahdi thanked Russia for its consistent stance on regional and global security issues, and spoke in favour of further strengthening Russia-Iraq relations.
The meeting participants raised topical issues on the international agenda, including the developments in the Middle East. The parties expressed a common opinion on the changes taking place in world affairs, leading to the weakening of the collective West and the strengthening of emerging political and economic centres, with relations between them to develop based on each other’s interests and trust without external interference.
