Valentina Matvienko: The growing number of like-minded people and their engagement is key to further strengthening the BRICS countries’ parliamentary interaction

The Speaker of the Federation Council summed up the results of the 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum.

Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko summed up the results of the 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum that ended in St Petersburg.

According to her, the growing number of like-minded people, their active engagement is the main proof that the forum is needed. It is key to further strengthening parliamentary interaction.

Valentina Matvienko thanked the parliamentarians for substantive discussions, openness for dialogue, and numerous ideas and proposals. She considers it important to address a number of issues to promote further cooperation. In particular, she explained that it is necessary to continue the dialogue between the speakers of the BRICS parliaments, which is a guarantee of high-quality discussions and implementation of the agreements reached: “This will help maintain the effectiveness of the Forum.”

The Federation Council Speaker believes that the main task is to fully involve the new members in all the previously agreed projects and mechanisms, as well as to step up the speed of promoting cooperation:

“This would require increasing the exchange of experience in legislative activity between the parliaments of our countries.”

Valentina Matvienko stressed that the Parliamentary Forum had the potential to become a significant element of interstate interaction within BRICS.

The Federation Council Speaker invited the parliamentarians to take part in the fourth Eurasian Women’s Forum to be held in St Petersburg in September 2024, where women’s involvement in the economy, politics and social life will be discussed: “The BRICS Women’s Business Alliance will take an active part in the event.”

The participants in the 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum adopted a Joint Declaration following the meetings and discussions.
