Meeting of the Federation Council and the National Council of the Republic of Namibia’s cooperation groups in Windhoek

The Russian parliamentary delegation concludes its working visit to Namibia.

A joint meeting of the Federation Council and the National Council of the Republic of Namibia cooperation groups was chaired by the leaders of friendship groups: Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Social Policy Yelena Perminova, and Chair of the Standing Committee on Implementation and Coordination John Musialela Likando

The delegation included First Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Budget and Financial Markets Nikolay Lubimov and Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Social Policy Mohmad Akhmadov.

The meeting participants focused on enhancing parliamentary diplomacy. They singled out social security and healthcare legislation, digitalisation, and the need to support mutual trade and investment as key areas of cooperation in the near future.

Members of the National Council of the Republic of Namibia expressed their interest in providing Namibian students with the opportunity to study medical and engineering disciplines in Russian universities, as well as opening a Russian language youth centre in Windhoek.

Mohmad Akhmadov stressed the importance of information support for bilateral cooperation. He suggested broadcasting Russian news channels in Namibia, issuing periodicals, and ensuring the operation of Russian news agencies on an ongoing basis.

Namibian parliamentarians invited the Federation Council delegation to take part as observers in the nationwide elections scheduled to take place this November.

The Russian parliamentarians also met with Ben Nangombe, Executive Director in the Ministry of Health and Social Services of Namibia.

During the meeting, they discussed cooperation in the healthcare sector, including the training of medical personnel at Russian universities and advanced training of Namibian healthcare professionals. The parties noted the frequent interdepartmental contacts between the two countries.

The delegation also visited the Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board, where they were received by Executive Director Francois van Schalkwyk. He noted the importance of stepping up bilateral investment cooperation and mentioned the International Investment Forum in Namibia, which was attended by Russian businesspeople. Promising areas of cooperation, such as tourism, the mining industry, green energy technologies, digital technologies, and the pharmaceutical industry, were also discussed.
