Federation Council Speaker meets with China’s Prosecutor General

Valentina Matvienko invited women from the staff of the Supreme People’s Procuratorate of China to take part in the fourth Eurasian Women’s Forum.


Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko met with Prosecutor General of the Supreme People’s Procuratorate of the People’s Republic of China Ying Yong, who attended the sixth meeting of the heads of BRICS prosecution offices held in St Petersburg on 18−19 June.

The agenda of Ying Yong’s visit included bilateral meetings with the Prosecutor General, the chair of the Investigative Committee and the Interior Minister of Russia.

Russia and China will mark the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2024, the Federation Council Speaker said. She emphasised the exceptionally high level of strategic partnership and comprehensive cooperation established by the leaders of Russia and China.

Valentina Matvienko mentioned the progress of interparliamentary and interregional cooperation between Russia and China. Ying Yong previously held the posts of deputy chair of the Constitution and Law Committee of the National People's Congress of China and mayor of Shanghai.

Ying Yong spoke highly of the development of bilateral cooperation in the sphere of law, which constitutes the legal framework of the bilateral partnership. He also spoke about deepening ties between law enforcement and judicial authorities.

The Federation Council Speaker highlighted the importance of strengthening ties between the two countries’ law enforcement bodies in the face of current threats, including those related to international security, terrorism and drug trafficking. Our legislators are promptly adjusting legislation to adapt to the new geopolitical realities and the macroeconomic situation and are coordinating risk response measures, Valentina Matvienko said.

She added that an exchange programme was launched last year to upgrade the qualifications of the staff of Russian and Chinese prosecutor’s offices. The Federation Council Speaker proposed extending this practice to the regional level.

Valentina Matvienko took the opportunity to invite women from the staff of the Supreme People’s Procuratorate of China to take part in the fourth Eurasian Women’s Forum, which will be held in St Petersburg on 18−20 September 2024.

The meeting was also attended by Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev, Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Grigory Karasin, Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation and State Building and the Federation Council’s plenipotentiary representative at the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Supreme Court of Russia Andrey Klishas, as well as First Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs and head of the Federation Council’s group on cooperation with the National People’s Congress of China Andrey Denisov.
