Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev took part in a meeting of Russia's Interdepartmental Commission on the Council of Europe.
The meeting was chaired by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The meeting focused on Russia's interaction with European and international organisations.
During the discussion it was noted that the Council of Europe had ceased to play any significant role on the continent today because it had completely lost its subjectivity and become a political tool in the hands of the European Union and NATO, the senator said.
”All the pluses of Russia's membership in the Council of Europe and PACE – the possibility of dialogue and solving practical problems, the benefits of ECHR instruments for citizens – disappeared as each of the areas of activity became politicised, because all issues were blocked,“ Konstantin Kosachev believes.
”Life has confirmed that Russia's decision to withdraw from the Council of Europe and PACE was correct and logical,“ the Federation Council Deputy Speaker emphasised.
