A Federation Council delegation headed by Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Grigory Karasin visited the Republic of South Ossetia. The senators took part in events marking the 15th anniversary of Russia’s recognition of South Ossetia’s independence.

The delegation included Member of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Sergei Tsekov, Member of the Federation Council Committee on Defence and Security Krym Kazanokov and Member of the Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation and State Building Olga Kovitidi.

During the visit, the senators met with President of the Republic of South Ossetia Alan Gagloyev. They congratulated the leadership of South Ossetia on behalf of Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko.

Delegation members met with Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of South Ossetia Alan Alborov and Co-Chair of the Commission for Cooperation between the Federation Council and the Parliament of the Republic of South Ossetia and Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Policy and Interparliamentary Ties Zaza Driaev.

Grigory Karasin congratulated the delegation members on this historical date. “The Executive Order of the President of the Russian Federation on Recognising the Republic of South Ossetia was signed exactly 15 years ago. This decision was made on the basis of free will expressed by the people of South Ossetia. It relied on the principles of international law formalised in fundamental documents, including the UN Charter, the 1970 Declaration on Principles of International Law concerning Friendly Relations and Cooperation among States in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and the Helsinki Final Act of 1975,” the senator said.

He noted that, over the years, truly fraternal relations had taken shape between our countries and are developing actively in all fields in accordance with the principles of mutual alliance and integration. “Russia has provided comprehensive support to South Ossetia in the fields of state building, ensuring security and developing the economy and the social sphere, and it will continue to provide this assistance.”

Grigory Karasin said he believed that the parliaments would continue to make an important contribution to stronger allied relations between the two countries. “Over the years, regular meetings, consultations and mutual visits involving lawmakers have become a good tradition. Russian MPs regularly share with their South Ossetian colleagues their experience of legislative work and of building a modern state based on the rule of law. We are committed to expanding our all-round partnership in these spheres.”

The senator noted that over a short time period South Ossetia had accomplished tangible results on the difficult road of asserting itself as an independent and democratic state. He wished the people of South Ossetia new achievements, prosperity, peace and well-being.

During the festivities held in the city of Tskhinval, the senators also took part in an official meeting dedicated to the 15th anniversary of recognising the independence of the Republic of South Ossetia. They visited an exhibition of masterpieces by South Ossetian and Russian artists and attended a concert of classical and opera music performed by musicians from Russia and South Ossetia.
