The Federation Council Deputy Speaker had a meeting with Tulia Ackson, Speaker of the National Assembly of the United Republic of Tanzania and President of the IPU African Geopolitical Group.
Federation Council Deputy Speaker Konstantin Kosachev met with Tulia Ackson, Speaker of the National Assembly of the United Republic of Tanzania and President of the IPU African Geopolitical Group, via videoconference.
The speaker of the Tanzanian parliament noted the traditionally good bilateral relations between Russia and Tanzania, emphasising their active cooperation in many areas.
The Federation Council Deputy Speaker congratulated Tulia Ackson on the upcoming professional holiday: 30 June will mark the International Day of Parliamentarism, established on Russia’s initiative in 2018.
Konstantin Kosachev also highlighted the fact that sanctions against parliamentarians were unacceptable.
“We have repeatedly raised this issue in the Inter-Parliamentary Union and initiated several relevant statements with the leadership of the Union. Voters speak through their parliamentarians, that is, millions of active citizens in their countries who have authorised them to represent their interests, including in the international arena,” the Senator said.
The parties discussed the IPU’s topical agenda, focusing on sustainable development and the climate agenda, respect for human rights, and the improvement of IPU mechanisms. The election of a new president of the Union in the autumn will be of great importance here.
Today, there are three candidates: Speaker of the National Assembly of the United Republic of Tanzania Tulia Ackson, Speaker of the National Assembly of Malawi Catherine Gotani Hara, and member of the National Assembly of Senegal Adji Diarra Mergane Kanouté.
Duarte Pacheco of Portugal, a member of the Twelve Plus Geopolitical Group, has been presiding at the organisation since 2020.
The president of the IPU is elected for a three-year term. The organisation tries to ensure regular rotation between its various geopolitical groups.
