Russia fully shares and applies in practice the principles and objectives of the UN Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Geneva Conventions, regarding refugees and migrants, the senator said.
Chair of the Federation Council Committee for Science, Education and Culture Lilia Gumerova spoke at the 34th session of the Forum of Women Parliamentarians, which was held as part of 145th IPU Assembly in Kigali, Republic of Rwanda. The senator took part in the discussion of the gender aspects of the Assembly’s draft resolution on “Parliamentary impetus to local and regional development of countries with high levels of international migration and to stopping all forms, including state-sponsored, of human-trafficking and human rights abuses.”
Lilia Gumerova welcomed the participants of the meeting and thanked the representatives of Rwanda for the efficient organisation of the Assembly and the warm welcome.
The senator stressed that, Russia fully shares and applies in practice the principles and goals of the UN Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Geneva Conventions on refugees and migrants.
According to Lilia Gumerova, analysis showed that above all women migrants were in need of legal support. In this regard, Russian senators were actively involved in the activities of the Interdepartmental Commission on Improving Migration Legislation.
“A common legal act on migration policy is nearing completion. It will regulate such areas as medical care, employment, placing children in kindergartens and educational institutions, as well as receiving food and using public services,” the parliamentarian added.
Lilia Gumerova also said that anti-Russian formulations in the draft resolution under discussion were unacceptable and emphasised their political bias.
