The meeting was used to focus on plans for further developing and deepening inter-parliamentary ties, Iliyas Umakhanov said.
First Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Science, Education and Culture Iliyas Umakhanov met with First Deputy Speaker of the Senate of Uzbekistan’s Oliy Majlis Sadyk Safayev in Tashkent.
The senators co-chair the Commission on Cooperation between the Federation Council and the Oliy Majlis Senate.
Iliyas Umakhanov and Sadyk Safayev discussed the state of and development prospects for interparliamentary cooperation between the Federation Council and the Oliy Majlis Senate. They also covered preparations for the 7th meeting of the interparliamentary commission, to be held in October in Uzbekistan.
Iliyas Umakhanov noted that the commission’s upcoming meeting would focus on plans for bilateral cooperation in higher education, legislative support for commercial, economic and investment activity, as well as labour migration cooperation.
Iliyas Umakhanov added that the Russian Federation and the Republic of Uzbekistan are not simply neighbours; they are strategic partners.
“In the past years, Russian-Uzbekistani cooperation has been expanding. This year is important for our countries as we mark 30 years of diplomatic relations and 30 years since the signing of the Treaty of Interstate Relations, Friendship and Cooperation,” the senator said.
The parties also discussed organising a research conference to mark the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Russia and Uzbekistan.
During his visit, Iliyas Umakhanov visited the World Economy and Diplomacy University of the Foreign Ministry of Uzbekistan and the Tashkent branch of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations of the Russian Foreign Ministry where he met with the teaching staff and students.
