Valentina Matvienko: Russia and Mozambique can fruitfully develop bilateral cooperation

Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko summed up the results of her official visit to the Republic of Mozambique.

Speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko met with President of the Republic of Mozambique Filipe Jacinto Nyusi and Prime Minister of the Republic of Mozambique Adriano Maleiane.

As Valentina Matvienko told reporters, the talks were substantive and productive, and discussions covered the most pressing issues on the bilateral agenda.

“The people of Mozambique remember well and appreciate the role played by our country in supporting the sovereignty of the Republic, in the process of establishing statehood and building economic capacity. This is the foundation on which our modern relations are developing,” said the Federation Council Speaker.

Mozambique has substantial interest in expanding ties with Russia in various fields, Valentina Matvienko emphasised.

She recalled that the main mechanism for trade and economic cooperation between the two countries is the Russian-Mozambican Intergovernmental Commission for Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation.

The Speaker noted that during the meetings with the leaders of Mozambique, agreements were reached on expanding the legal framework of relations. “This is important legal support for our businesses and creates conditions for greater humanitarian cooperation.”

Valentina Matvienko also noted the Mozambique’s support of most Russian foreign policy initiatives in international organisations, primarily the UN, and the measured and balanced position of the country’s leadership regarding Russia's special military operation in Ukraine.

President Felipe Jacinto Nyusi expressed words of support for Russia and understanding that our country is now acting in such a way as to avoid high casualties, Valentina Matvienko emphasised.

“A meeting was held with President of the Assembly of the Republic of Mozambique Esperanca Bias. We established good contacts with the Assembly. I am sure that we will be able to continue to successfully advance our cooperation,” concluded Valentina Matvienko.
