Grigory Karasin meets with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Switzerland to Russia

The interlocutors discussed issues related to Russian-Georgian interaction in a constructive key.

The Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Grigory Karasin held a meeting with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Swiss Confederation to the Russian Federation Krystyna Marty Lang.

The Chairman of the Federation Council Committee noted with satisfaction the active interaction with the representatives of Switzerland on international platforms and the mediating efforts of Swiss partners in matters of representing Russian interests in Georgia and Georgian interests in Russia. “Undoubtedly, this has a positive effect on the formation of an atmosphere of predictability and stability not only in Europe, but in the world as a whole,” the senator stressed.

Grigory Karasin and Krystyna Marty Lang discussed in detail the current situation in the South Caucasus. The senator informed his interlocutor about the meeting held with the special representative of the Prime Minister of Georgia Zurab Abashidze, which took place on November 24 via videoconference with the participation of representatives of the ministries of foreign affairs and transport of both countries.

During the meeting, the importance of the Geneva Discussions on Security and Stability in the Transcaucasus was once again emphasized. The Russian side reaffirmed its commitment to the Geneva format, ensuring a direct and inclusive dialogue between Georgia, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, and expressed gratitude to the Swiss side for the balanced, non-politicized chairmanship of the Joint Committee on Unresolved Issues within the framework of implementation of the 2011 Agreement on the Basic Principles for a Mechanism of Customs Administration and Monitoring of Trade in Goods.

For her part, Krystyna Marty Lang reported on the results of her recent trip to Tbilisi in November this year.

Grigory Karasin drew the attention of the Swiss side to the destructive policy pursued by the Georgian authorities, including on international platforms. “The refusal of Tbilisi to participate in the kickoff meeting of the regional consultative mechanism “3 + 3” (Azerbaijan-Armenia-Georgia + Russia-Iran-Turkey) is regrettable. At the same time, we are ready to discuss all the problematic issues and search for unifying topics, as well as align our interests in the economic and humanitarian spheres, despite all existing contradictions“, the senator emphasized.
