Federation Council delegation monitors presidential election in Uzbekistan

The senators visited polling stations in Tashkent, Samarkand and Bokhara.


A delegation from the Federation Council led by First Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Science, Education and Culture Ilias Umakhanov took part in monitoring the presidential election in the Republic of Uzbekistan.

The observer mission comprised First Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Science, Education and Culture Ilias Umakhanov (coordinator of the Federation Council delegation), Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Farit Mukhametshin (representing the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly), member of the Federation Council Committee on Social Policy Vladimir Krugly (representing the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union of Belarus and Russia), member of the Federation Council Committee on Federal Structure, Regional Policy, Local Government and Northern Affairs Grigory Ledkov (representing the SCO), member of the Federation Council Committee on the Budget and Financial Markets Akhmat Salpagarov, and member of the Federation Council Committee on Agriculture and Food Policy and Environmental Management Belan Khamchiev.

The senators visited polling stations in Tashkent, Samarkand and Bokhara, talked with members of district electoral commissions, observers from opposition political parties, as well as voters.

Delegation members noted the competent organisation of the election campaign, freedom of expression and high voter activity; the turnout was over 80 percent.

The observers also noted the measures taken at the polling stations to protect members of the election process from the coronavirus infection.

According to the senators, the presidential election was held in Uzbekistan without major violations, in a calm and friendly atmosphere.

Ilias Umakhanov pointed out that presidential elections were important for maintaining stability and for ensuring socioeconomic development in Uzbekistan and Central Asia as a whole.

Five candidates vied for the post of president. Presidential elections are held in Uzbekistan every five years.
