Andrei Klimov: There have been signs of outside interference in Russia’s internal affairs during preparations for the single voting day

Andrei Klimov, Chair of the Ad Hoc Commission on Protecting State Sovereignty and Preventing Interference in the Domestic Affairs of the Russian Federation, gave a media statement.

Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs and Chair of the Ad Hoc Commission on Protecting State Sovereignty and Preventing Interference in the Domestic Affairs of the Russian Federation Andrei Klimov gave a media statement about signs of outside interference in the internal affairs of the Russian Federation during preparations for the single voting day.

According to the senator, the ad hoc commission’s monitoring in summer revealed that after the adoption of the constitutional amendments that reinforced the legal basis of Russia’s sovereignty, Washington and its foreign partners did not abandon their attempts to interfere in Russia’s domestic affairs.

“The developments in July and August have shown that such conclusions were correct. The scenario devised in the United States and enacted during the presidential election in the Republic of Belarus was intended to destabilise the political situation in Russia and create another crisis near its borders,” said Andrei Klimov.

The senator added that in Russia the biggest stakes were on creating seats of tension in certain Russian regions during the elections to regional parliaments scheduled for 13 September.

“However, neither the developments in Belarus, nor the attempts to create chaos in the Russian regions could bring about the effect expected by foreign scriptwriters and directors. The Russian political system showed once again its resistance to attempts of outside pressure.

Andrei Klimov stated that attempts are still being made from abroad to put their candidates in the regional authorities and self-government bodies with a view to destabilising the political situation in Russia.

The senator also noted that at the same time teams of bloggers are forming who, with foreign support, engage in various propaganda activities with respect to Russian citizens.

Andrei Klimov said that the Federation Council’s ad hoc commission will continue to monitor the situation and review its results, taking into account the results of the single voting day, at its next meeting in late September. “Then we will discuss proposals on an appropriate response to new outside challenges according to the amended Russian Constitution,” stressed the senator.
