Valentina Matvienko: Russian-Libyan parliamentary cooperation has huge prospects

The Federation Council Speaker had a meeting with the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Libya.

Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko had a meeting with Aguila Saleh Issa, Speaker of the House of Representatives of Libya.

Deputy Federation Council Speaker Ilyas Umakhanov, Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Konstantin Kosachev and Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Farit Mukhametshin took part in the conversation.

“Russia does not remain indifferent to the destiny of Libya and its people. We are closely following developments on its territory. We hope that the country will overcome this difficult stage in its development. We sincerely want Libya to become a prosperous state,” Valentina Matvienko said.

The Federation Council Speaker expressed firm confidence that there was no alternative to intra-Libyan disagreements except a political settlement through peace talks.

Aguila Saleh Issa noted the importance of initiatives by Russia and the international community for establishing peace in Libya. The Speaker of the House of Representatives of Libya reaffirmed a desire for partnership and cooperation with Russia on the basis of Libyan laws and international law.

The parties exchanged opinions on ways of overcoming the Libyan crisis and assessed optimal ways of normalising the situation.

“We voice close or coinciding opinions on the situation and approaches to resolving it. Similar positions are a weighty argument for parliamentary cooperation, which has huge prospects,” Valentina Matvienko said.

The Federation Council Speaker also noted that Russian MPs supported international mechanisms aiming to resolve the situation in Libya.

“We are ready to help launch the political settlement process in Libya and to strengthen the UN role at the same time,” Valentina Matvienko said in conclusion.
