Valentina Matvienko’s greetings on International Day of Parliamentarism

Colleagues,

I wish you all the best on the occasion of International Day of Parliamentarism!

This memorable date was included in the official United Nations calendar not so long ago, on 22 May 2018, at the initiative of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the Member States of the Commonwealth of Independent States. This day aims to emphasise the growing role of democratic institutions of public authority and parliaments in the modern world in strengthening trust and mutual understanding between peoples, and preserving global security.

The legislative (representative) bodies of state power in Russia are now working constructively to improve the legal framework for the operation of our civil society. Guided by the principles of democracy, openness and responsibility before our voters, they make decisions aimed at consistently strengthening the economy and the social sphere, and reliably protecting our national interests. The consolidated efforts of lawmakers contribute to an effective domestic and foreign policy, address hostile challenges, and ensure the comprehensive implementation of people’s constitutional rights and freedoms.

I am confident that inter-parliamentary cooperation, the exchange of best legislative practices, and the preservation and promotion of the traditions of democracy are of great importance for the further development of the entire international law system, and for creating an atmosphere of neighbourliness and mutually beneficial cooperation.

I wish you all new achievements, peace and prosperity.

VALENTINA MATVIYENKO
