Konstantin Kosachyov: IPU President’s statement underscores the importance of mutual support and collective measures in the fight against external threats

The Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs commented on a statement by President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union on the occasion of Victory Day.

Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the Eurasia Geopolitical Group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Konstantin Kosachyov commented on a statement by IPU President Gabriela Cuevas Barron dedicated to Victory Day.

Konstantin Kosachyov noted the IPU President’s words that despite the increasing attempts of some countries to revise the results of the war, we should learn to objectively recognise the role and contribution of our countries to the Victory, regardless of the differences in political systems and ideologies that exist now.

“The statement reads that the Victory over Nazism is our common heritage, which should unite us and which we should rightfully be proud of, rather than try to use it as an opportunity to falsify history. Russia has been proposing the term ‘common heritage’ to the international community for many years and has consistently opposed attempts to falsify history by a number of states and individuals,” Konstantin Kosachyov underlined.

The senator added that the Federation Council has developed a draft appeal to the peoples and parliaments of all countries reminding them that falsifying the history of World War II and rehabilitating Nazism is unacceptable. According to Konstantin Kosachyov, attempts by some countries to revise the outcome of the war are actually their way of disregarding the verdicts of the Nuremberg trials.

“The statement also noted that all countries and peoples are equally vulnerable to global threats, and that it is impossible to solve such problems alone. Therefore, it is extremely important to avoid the path of national egoism, but, on the contrary, to strive for unity of effort and solidarity,” the senator said.

“Russian parliamentarians fully share Gabriela Cuevas Barron’s opinion that humanity can achieve a lot when it is united, while politicians can rise above their differences,” Konstantin Kosachyov concluded.
