The parties discussed bilateral relations

Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko had a meeting with President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko during her official visit to Belarus as head of a Federation Council delegation.

The Speaker and the President discussed various aspects of the two countries’ bilateral relations.

The Speaker spoke about the preparations for the 7th Forum of Russian and Belarusian Regions that this year will commemorate the legacy of the Great Victory.

The parties stressed that the Russian parliamentary delegation’s visit was taking place during the year of the 75th anniversary of Victory which serves as a common spiritual and moral guide for our countries and nations.

Valentina Matvienko noted the role of parliamentary diplomacy in the development of bilateral relations, and spoke about the delegation’s very intense programme during the visit.

The Speaker highlighted one of the momentous events that took place during the Minsk visit, the laying of a memorial capsule, containing soil from the sites of fierce battles near Rzhev, at the Memorial Church of All Saints and Victims Who Served the Salvation of Our Fatherland. “The soil from that land soaked in the blood of Russians, Belarusians and representatives of other peoples will be kept in this Minsk church. This gesture is particularly significant in the year of the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory. It is very important for preserving the memory, for our young people and children,” Valentina Matvienko said.
