Konstantin Kosachyov has meeting with Hamas Political Bureau Chief Ismail Haniyeh

Russian MPs are ready to provide all possible support in resolving the Palestinian problem, the senator believes.

Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Konstantin Kosachyov met with Chief of the Political Bureau of the Palestinian Hamas movement Ismail Haniyeh, who is visiting Moscow as the head of a delegation of this Palestinian movement.

“Russia supports the legitimate right of the Palestinian people to statehood and sovereignty. We are convinced that the tense situation in the Middle East is connected, inter alia, with the unresolved Palestinian issue. Russian MPs are ready to provide all possible assistance in resolving this problem,” said Konstantin Kosachyov.

The senator noted that the legitimate interests of the Palestinian side are rarely taken into account by Western countries, and the long-lasting Middle East conflicts require a careful resolution, including with the involvement of the Middle East Quartet of international mediators with the participation of Russia.

Konstantin Kosachyov also emphasised that Russian MPs are ready to provide guidance in the process of organising and conducting the upcoming elections to the Palestinian Legislative Council and in resolving the current humanitarian problems.

Ismail Haniyeh expressed gratitude to the Russian side for supporting the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, including at various international venues, comprising the UN Security Council, and noted the central role of Russia in resolving the Palestinian conflict.
