Konstantin Kosachev: Representatives of three key Federation Council committees to visit DPRK this year

The Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs held a meeting with DPRK’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Russia

Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Konstantin Kosachev held a meeting with DPRK’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Russia Kim Hyun Joon. The meeting was attended by Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Federal Structure, Regional Policy, Local Government and Northern Affairs, Head of the Group on the Federation Council’s Cooperation with the Supreme People's Assembly of the DPRK Oleg Melnichenko.

“Meetings between Russian parliamentarians and representatives of North Korea are now held on a regular basis and are substantive due to the fact that friendship groups have stepped up inter-parliamentary visits and activities,” said Konstantin Kosachev.

He added that a visit of three key Federation Council committees’ representatives to Pyongyang was scheduled for this year.

As well as this, the Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs noted that Russia was implementing the UN Security Council’s decisions on North Korea but was against introducing additional unilateral sanctions by some states.

“Russia continues to provide North Korea with humanitarian aid and will fulfill its responsibilities completely,” Konstantin Kosachev noted.

Kim Hyun Joon pointed out the dynamic development of bilateral ties. According to him, the visits held and scheduled at parliamentarian level prove that relations are stepping up.

During the conversation, Konstantin Kosachev, Oleg Melnichenko and Kim Hyun Joon discussed prospects for the implementation of joint Russian-North Korean economic projects as well as the current situation in the sphere of North Korean labour migration and the fishing industry.
