Iliyas Umakhanov: Russian delegation aims to work constructively with APPF member states

Senators take part in the 27th session of the Asia Pacific Parliamentary Forum in Cambodia

A delegation of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation led by Federation Council Deputy Speaker Iliyas Umakhanov takes part in the 27th session of the Asia Pacific Parliamentary Forum in Siem Reap, Cambodia. The session events are held on 13–17 January.

The delegation is comprised of First Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation and State Building Lyudmila Bokova, Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Andrei Klimov and Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Science, Education and Culture Igor Morozov.

During plenary meetings, the parliamentarians discuss issues related to politics and security as well as trade, economic and regional cooperation in the Asia-Pacific Region.

In his speech at the opening of the debates, Iliyas Umakhanov noted that current international relations were in the middle of a difficult and controversial transformation, and events around the globe were developing more rapidly and less predictably. “Under these conditions, parliamentary diplomacy is an important tool for strengthening mutual understanding and cooperation between the Asia-Pacific countries,” the Russian senator stressed.

The deputy speaker added that the Russian delegation aimed to work constructively with the APPF member states to promote peace and security in the Asia-Pacific Region. In order to do this, the Russian parliamentarians submitted five resolutions on all the key issues on the forum agenda.

On the eve of the opening of the APPF session, Iliyas Umakhanov held a meeting with Say Chhum, President of the Cambodian Senate. The deputy speaker observed that Russian-Cambodian bilateral relations were actively developing in a wide range of areas, including through links between legislative bodies.

Iliyas Umakhanov reaffirmed that Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko planned to come to the Kingdom of Cambodia on an official visit.
