Speaker of the Federation Council: Russia highly values relations with the Republic of Korea

The Speaker of the Federation Council visited the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea


Speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko met with Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea Moon Hee-sang.

“Russia highly values relations with the Republic of Korea — its major and prospective partner in the Asia-Pacific Region,” Valentina Matvienko said.

She reaffirmed the consolidated intention of the MPs to develop relations from the positions of interparliamentary cooperation.

 “Russia-South Korea relations can serve as a model for other countries, Valentina Matvienko said, emphasising that relations are developing steadily and dynamically.

“We maintain a comprehensive dialogue and a high level of cooperation between our ministries and departments. We are focused on implementing the agreements reached by the Russian Federation and the Republic of Korea,” she said.

Moon Hee-sang noted that the visit of the Russian delegation to Seoul was timely. “Signs of peace and stability are felt on the Korean Peninsula. This visit will facilitate further consolidation,” he said.

During the talks the participants noted the development of trade and economic cooperation and humanitarian ties.

 Valentina Matvienko invited Moon Hee-sang to visit the Federation Council and the Russian regions. The parties expressed interest in organising inter-parliamentary roundtable discussions on developing Russian-South Korean business. They suggested developing new formats for interparliamentary cooperation, in part, via the internet for exchanging lawmaking experience and developing and expanding international the legal foundation for bilateral ties. The parties agreed that the signing of an intergovernmental agreement on mutual recognition of diplomas would facilitate the intensification of student and academic exchanges between Russia and South Korea.

They also discussed the situation on the Korean Peninsula and major international issues.

“Russia highly values the striving of North and South Koreas to follow the road of dialogue and agreements. We are willing to continue facilitating the process of nuclear disarmament and the creation of a collective security system with consideration for the interests of all states in Northeast Asia,” the Federation Council Speaker said.

Valentina Matvienko visited the Seoul National Cemetery and laid a wreath at the monument of soldiers who perished for the sake of their homeland.

The Federation Council delegation in the Republic of Korea included: Deputy Speaker Iliyas Umakhanov, Chair of the Committee on Defence and Security Viktor Bondarev, First Deputy Chair of the Committee on Constitutional Legislation and State Building Lyudmila Bokova, member of the Committee on Social Policy Yury Arkharov, and member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs Farit Mukhametshin.
