Speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko held a meeting with President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic.

The conversation took place on the sidelines of the Second Eurasian Women’s Forum in St Petersburg.

“Relations between our countries are developing in the spirit of strategic partnership,” the Federation Council Speaker said. She noted the common approaches of the two countries to the common historical legacy and the lessons of World War II, as well to the need to preserve multilateral cooperation of both countries.

“The tight schedule of bilateral contacts shows the close interaction between our countries in a wide range of issues at all levels,” she added.

Valentina Matvienko noted Serbia’s military neutrality, which has been repeatedly confirmed by the government, and the refusal to join the anti-Russia sanctions imposed by the West.

According to Maja Gojkovic, bilateral relations are at a very high level and the two countries’ approaches to various issues are very close.

The parties praised the growth of mutual trade and spoke about the development of interregional cooperation and talks on the free trade agreement between Serbia and the Eurasian Economic Union.

The two officials noted the developing bilateral parliamentary cooperation and emphasised their readiness to improve it further, including through the relevant committees and parliamentary friendship groups.
