“The Federation Council contributed to the development of this large project. We established the Advisory Council on the Promotion of Russian-Japanese Interparliamentary and Interregional Cooperation by analogy to the Japan-Russia Discussion Club at the House of Councillors of the Japanese Diet. This mechanism is very effective,” Matvienko said.

She also noted that the Russian-Japanese interparliamentary dialogue would help strengthen relations between the peoples of the two countries.

Chuichi Date also said he was confident that the Japanese delegation’s visit to Russia and the talks at the Federation Council would contribute to strengthening Russian-Japanese cooperation.

He expressed appreciation for the number of interparliamentary contacts emphasising that the Advisory Council and the Japan-Russia Discussion Club were guiding such developments.

The parties discussed developing interparliamentary relations and the prospects for cooperation between the two countries.

Chuichi Date expressed interest in the development of cooperation, including work in the humanitarian sphere.

They also discussed a number of other matters of bilateral relations.

One of the most important subjects was interregional cooperation. Matvienko said the upper houses of the two parliaments can aid the development of interregional connections.
