Grigory Karasin: Russia and Namibia consistently develop inter-parliamentary cooperation

The Senator met with the Namibian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary.

Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Grigory Karasin held a meeting with Ambassador of the Republic of Namibia to the Russian Federation Clemens Handuukeme Kashuupulwa.

“Russian-Namibian relations are based on the strong ties of friendship and mutual understanding that go back to the years when the Namibian people heroically fought for their self-determination,” the Senator said. He noted the high level of political dialogue, the similarity in the approaches to the key issues on the global and African agendas, and the stable nature of the multifaceted cooperation between the two countries.

“Inter-parliamentary cooperation is an important aspect of Russian-Namibian ties. The Agreement on Cooperation between the Federation Council and the National Council of the Republic of Namibia, signed last March during Chairperson of the National Council Lukas Sinimbo Muha’s visit to Moscow, will give a new impetus to this cooperation,” Grigory Karasin stressed.

The Senator noted Namibia’s constructive participation in the 2nd Russia-Africa International Parliamentary Conference in March. “The event marked an important milestone in preparations for the upcoming 2nd Russia-Africa Summit in St Petersburg this July, which will be attended by heads of state and representatives of the business community. The forum programme’s political track will be dedicated to the Russia-Africa agenda in the context of our common aspiration to build a just world order based on the principles of respect for international law, multi-polarity, consideration for national interests, indivisible security and the UN’s central coordinating role.”

The meeting participants expressed willingness to further intensify inter-parliamentary contacts and to support a regular and substantive dialogue in which parliamentary friendship groups are expected to play a major role.

The parties voiced their intentions to develop trade, economic and humanitarian cooperation. Grigory Karasin emphasised Russia’s interest in continuing to advance mutually beneficial links with Namibia across all sectors and to support its Namibian friends in the spirit of decades-long friendship and solidarity between our countries and nations.

Yelena Perminova, Head of the Group on Cooperation Between the Federation Council and the National Council of the Republic of Namibia, also took part in the meeting.
