Konstantin Kosachev speaks at the plenary session of the 143rd IPU Assembly in Madrid

The discussion focused on “Contemporary Challenges to Democracy: Overcoming Division and Building Community”.

Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev, who headed the delegation of the Federal Assembly at the 143rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Madrid, spoke at the plenary session of the Assembly. The discussion addressed contemporary challenges to democracy: overcoming division and building community.

Konstantin Kosachev noted the unique potential of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in the process of implementing the conciliatory agenda and called for prioritizing the exchange of the advanced legislative and law enforcement practices in the fight against coronavirus. The Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council underlined that under current emergency conditions it is vital to ensure the uninterrupted work of national parliaments.

Furthermore, the Russian legislator spoke about the inadmissibility of imposing sanctions upon parliamentarians.

“We regard sanctions as absolutely unacceptable and violating the basic principles of democracy”, Konstantin Kosachev stated.

The Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council also took part in the seminar on interfaith dialogue organized by the IPU and UN structures.

As noted by Konstantin Kosachev, the seminar provided parliamentarians with an exclusive opportunity to exchange best practices needed to facilitate interfaith dialogue. The senator also informed the participants about the postponement of the World Conference on Intercultural and Interfaith Dialogue, which was originally planned to be held in St. Petersburg next May.

Konstantin Kosachev also participated in the Constituent Assembly of the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network, organized by the Azerbaijani delegation.
