Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko meets with President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev

A delegation from the Federation Council is on an official visit in Kazakhstan.


During the Federation Council delegation’s official visit to the Republic of Kazakhstan, Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko met with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in the country’s capital, Nur-Sultan.

Valentina Matvienko conveyed the Russian President’s greetings to the President of Kazakhstan and informed Kassym-Jomart Tokayev about the results of the Russian parliamentary delegation’s work in Nur-Sultan, the meetings with their Kazakhstani colleagues.

The parties noted the good dynamics of bilateral relations, which are of a strategic nature, emphasising the role of parliamentarians in expanding the legal framework necessary for the development of comprehensive interaction.

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev also noted the importance of strengthening inter-parliamentary ties.

They touched upon the expansion of multifaceted cooperation between the two countries, and strengthening interregional ties, as well as joint steps to overcome the consequences of the pandemic and respond to common security challenges.

The Federation Council Speaker invited representatives of Kazakhstan, as a country with vast experience of the peaceful coexistence of various ethnic and religious groups, to take an active part in the substantive preparation of the upcoming Conference on Intercultural and Interreligious Dialogue in St Petersburg in 2022.

The meeting was attended by First Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council, Russian Co-Chair of the Commission on Cooperation between the Federation Council and the Senate of the Republic of Kazakhstan Andrei Yatskin; Deputy Speaker Konstantin Kosachev; Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Defence and Security Viktor Bondarev; Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Grigory Karasin; First Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Federal Structure, Regional Policy, Local Government and Northern Affairs Andrei Shevchenko; and member of the Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation and State Building Oleg Tsepkin.

Today, Valentina Matvienko also visited the Astana International Financial Centre and laid a wreath at the Monument to the Defenders of the Motherland in Nur-Sultan.

The Federation Council delegation is on an official visit to Kazakhstan from 27–28 June. The programme of their visit includes meetings with Kazakhstan’s leaders and members of parliament.
