Federation Council Speaker meets with President of the Republic of Namibia

The Federation Council Speaker conveyed a verbal message from the President of the Russian Federation to the President of the Republic of Namibia

Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko had a conversation with the President of the Republic of Namibia Hage Gottfried Geingob.

The Federation Council Speaker conveyed a verbal message from the President of the Russian Federation to the President of the Republic of Namibia.

Talking to journalists, Valentina Matvienko said the Namibian leader and she had discussed the entire range of Russian-Namibian relations, as well as the implementation of decisions of the Russia-Africa Summit, held in Sochi in the autumn.

Hage Gottfried Geingob devoted considerable attention to matters regarding the expansion of trade, economic and investment cooperation between our countries and positively assessed the involvement of Russian companies in geological prospecting and nuclear power engineering projects in Namibia. I believe that this is a highly promising aspect of bilateral collaboration,” the Federation Council Speaker said.

Valentina Matvienko noted that it was now necessary to consider additional aspects of the legal framework of interstate relations.

The President of Namibia supported the idea of introducing visa-free trips between the two countries, the Federation Council Speaker pointed out. According to her, an agreement on visa-free trips between Russia and Namibia will help expand business operations, tourism, cultural and humanitarian ties.

“The President of Namibia said he was interested in expanding cooperation with Russia. The head of state said the people of Namibia had a good historical memory: The Namibians are grateful to Russia for its assistance and support to the Republic in the years of its heroic struggle for independence. This is a firm foundation for the further strengthening of our relations,” Valentina Matvienko concluded.

Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko also visited Heroes’ Acre, a memorial honouring the memory of the people who fought for the freedom of the Republic of Namibia, and a laid a wreath at the memorial.

The Federation Council delegation, now paying an official visit to the Republic of Namibia, includes Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Defence and Security Viktor Bondarev, First Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Agriculture and Food Policy and Environmental Management Sergei Mitin, First Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on the Budget and Financial Markets Yelena Perminova, Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Science, Education and Culture Igor Morozov, who is also a member of the Federation Council’s Group for Cooperation with Parliaments of Asian and African States, and Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Economic Policy Alexei Russkikh.
