Valentina Matvienko: Russian-Serbian relations have reached a genuine strategic partnership level

The Speaker of the Federation Council met with President of the Serbian National Assembly Maja Gojković

Speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko had a meeting with President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojković. Chair of the Council’s Committee on Foreign Affairs Konstantin Kosachyov also took part in the conversation.

“Russian-Serbian relations have reached the level of a genuine strategic partnership. We are interested in expanding and deepening cooperation with the fraternal Serbian people in all areas,” said Valentina Matvienko.

The Speaker underscored that interparliamentary cooperation played a significant role in Russian-Serbian relations.

The presiding officer of the upper house of the Russian parliament thanked the President of the Serbian National Assembly for the joint work and coordination of efforts at international forums, such as PACE, the OSCE and Inter-Parliamentary Union.

In this context Valentina Matvienko and Maja Gojković stressed the problem of preserving historical memory and the unacceptability of revising the historical account of the outcome of WWII. “We expect the President of Serbia to come to the celebrations of the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory,” said the Speaker.

Maja Gojković pointed out that Russian-Serbian dialogue is dynamic and substantive both in terms of bilateral contacts and in international forums. The President of the Serbian National Assembly expressed a desire to continue such active interaction with Russian parliamentarians.

The parties also discussed the results of the 141st Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Belgrade as well as some organisational issues and stages of preparation for the World Conference of Speakers of Parliament to be held in 2020.

Valentina Matvienko invited Maja Gojković to take part in the Third Eurasian Women’s Forum, which is to be held in Russia in September 2021.
