Konstantin Kosachev: Russia and Venezuela are coordinating positions on regional cooperation

The Senator met with the Ambassador of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to the Russian Federation.

Chair of the Federation Council's Committee on Foreign Affairs Konstantin Kosachev had a meeting with Ambassador of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to the Russian Federation Carlos Rafael Faria Tortosa. Oleg Melnichenko, Chair of the Federation Council's Committee on Federal Structure, Regional Policy, Local Government and Northern Affairs, also took part in the conversation.

Konstantin Kosachev noted that the talks were held at the instruction of the Federation Council Speaker as a follow-up to her recent meeting with the Acting Vice President of Venezuela. During the meeting, it was agreed to expand practical inter-regional cooperation between the two countries.

“According to relevant Russian ministries and departments, 23 Russian regions are already engaged in the trade and economic relations with Venezuela. This is not little at all but such relations need to grow, which is why we will start practical consultations in order to assess the real needs of Venezuela and the capabilities of Russian regions and bring them together for the benefit of the people of our countries,” said Konstantin Kosachev.

The Russian lawmaker believes that given the alarming situation developing around Venezuela they need to meet more often and coordinate positions to understand what steps Russia and Venezuela can take to defend the international principles of equality and respect for sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.

Carlos Rafael Faria Tortosa briefed the senators on tahe current situation in Venezuela.

He remarked that the Bolivarian Republic has quite a few projects that are open for participation by both private Russian businessmen and government enterprises.
